Pope Invites All Christians to Pray in Response to Pandemic This Friday
LEXINGTON — All Christians in the Catholic Diocese of Lexington are invited to join Pope Francis in prayer on Friday, March 27, at 1 p.m. Eastern time (6 p.m. Rome time) for a special ceremony taking place in St. Peter’s Square in Rome in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As we’ve been brought to our knees by this pandemic and yet not even able to gather in our churches, this is a special opportunity for Christians to pray together with Pope Francis for God’s deliverance from this terrible virus,” said Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., of Lexington. “I invite all people of goodwill to join the pope in prayer.”
The ceremony will consist of Scripture readings, prayers of petition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. It will conclude with the pope giving the Urbi et orbi Blessing, with the possibility of gaining a plenary indulgence for all those who listen to it live through the various forms of communication. This blessing “to the City [of Rome] and to the World” is normally only given on Christmas and Easter.
